Christopher Moore writes comedy that shouldn't work but absolutely does. He takes sacred cows -- religion, death, Shakespeare, vampire lore -- and turns them into something irreverent without ever feeling mean-spirited. His humor is absurdist and lowbrow in the best way, full of oddball characters who stumble through bizarre situations with hapless sincerity. There's always a surprising warmth underneath the chaos.
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal is the overwhelming consensus pick -- hilarious and oddly moving. A Dirty Job is a great alternative entry point. The Stupidest Angel for something shorter. His vampire trilogy starting with Bloodsucking Fiends for romance mixed with absurdity.
Terry Pratchett, Tom Robbins, Carl Hiaasen, Tim Dorsey, and Neil Gaiman's Good Omens.
